Home Birth Plans

I’m currently 35 weeks pregnant with baby number 6. At 24 weeks pregnant (more than halfway through my pregnancy) i switched from an OB-GYN to a Midwife. Today i’m going to share why i made the switch, and what my birth plans look like.

Honestly from the very beginning i knew this pregnancy was different, or maybe it is me that is different. Either way, immediately i had thoughts of having a home birth. I shared with my husband that i was thinking i wanted a home birth and at first it was a flat out ‘No’ from him. *A little background information here, my husband has past trauma from home births, so my asking him and getting his approval is to be respectful of him and his trauma.*

So, i let the idea of a home birth go for a little while and just saw my regular OB-GYN that i’ve seen since my first pregnancy over 15 years ago. I hated every appointment though. I just had this strong feeling that a home birth is what i was needing. So again, i talked with my husband about having a home birth. He still wasn’t on board, but it wasn’t a hard no like the first time.

Finally, after my 24 week appointment with my OB-GYN, my husband agreed that we could meet with a midwife and get more information on having a home birth. At 27/28 weeks pregnant we met a midwife and after leaving her office, my husband and i both felt a sense of calm & peace surrounding having a home birth.

I can’t give you a solid reason as to why i want a home birth, other than i just feel it in my soul that it is the right thing to do this time around.

As far as switching from an OB-GYN to a midwife, i was tired of feeling like a number. I was tired of feeling like i had no say in anything. I also don’t like a lot of the hospital’s policies, where i was going to deliver at.

I knew i had made the right decision to switch when i received a phone call from my OB-GYN’s office. I had an appointment scheduled with them for my 27 week check-up, but i cancelled it. I never heard from them until 2 days before Christmas (32 weeks pregnant). So the last time they had seen me was at my 24 week appointment, it had been almost 10 weeks before they even cared to contact me.

Anyways, i now have a midwife and i plan to birth at home completely naturally. My midwife has a birth pool that she will be bringing, although i’m not sure if i will use it or not. But it will be nice to have the option.

All of this is completely new for me, as all 5 of my other children have been born in the same hospital. I was also induced with all 5 of my other children. I also had an epidural for all 5 of my other children. So i’ve never experienced natural childbirth. That should probably scare me, but like i said this pregnancy has been different or i’m different, but i’m not scared at all. I feel so much peace surrounding this decision.

Later on this week, i plan on sharing my homeschool plans during the postpartum period. I will also be sharing some birth affirmations, that i plan on using for myself. And maybe even a home birth supply haul? Would anyone be interested in that? Let me know.

Baby Must Haves

Hi Guys!

Today i’m sharing my baby must haves.

I’ve seen so many of these ‘Baby Must Haves’ lists online and i find myself disagreeing with every one of them. To be honest all you need for your baby is 3 things…. a way to feed them (formula/breast milk), a way to diaper them (cloth/disposable), and clothes. That’s it! Everything else after that isn’t a must have, but a luxury.

So if you are looking for one of those lists that will tell you to buy the fancy baby swing and all the toys, you will need to search elsewhere, because my list is very minimal.

Without further ado, let’s get on with my list of baby must haves…

Baby Must Haves:

  • Diapers – Pampers Swaddlers are my favorite diaper, I’ve used them exclusively since baby number 3. When getting ready for a new baby, i always buy 1 box of Newborn & 1 box of Size 1.
  • Clothes – I always make sure to buy Newborn and size 0-3 month clothing. Most of the newborn size clothes i buy are PJ’s with the mitten cuffs included on them. I try to buy a fair amount of clothing because babies spit up/pee/poop a lot.
  • Blankets – They work great for swaddling, for covering up while breastfeeding, etc. I’ve always found that i can’t have too many baby blankets.
  • Shampoo – I don’t use anything fancy here, just plain old Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. It’s worked great for all of my babies.
  • Car Seat – The most expensive item on my must have list, but where i live i have to drive everywhere, so it’s necessary.

That’s everything on my baby must have list. Are you a minimalist when it comes to baby gear as well, or do you buy everything?!

My 3rd Trimester Must Haves

Hi Guys!

Today i’m sharing some of my 3rd trimester must haves.

I’m currently 34 weeks pregnant with baby number 6, and i thought i would just pass along what i feel like are must haves during my 3rd trimester.

3rd Trimester Must Haves:

  • Red Raspberry Leaf Tea – Drinking a cup a day (and up to 3 cups at 37 weeks) can help to decrease labor time. I’m not sure if this is really true or not, but i’m trying it cause why not?!
  • Probiotic – My midwife has recommended that i start taking a probiotic during the 3rd trimester to help promote good vaginal flora.
  • Extra Pillows – I don’t buy into the whole gimmick of a pregnancy body pillow, because to me it’s not practical. What do you even do with it after pregnancy?! Plus they are so expensive, $50 for a pillow?! That’s crazy! I do however like to have the support of an extra pillow during the 3rd trimester, but i always buy the cheap $5 – $10 ones! Plus, even after you are done being pregnant you can always use extra pillows!
  • Dates – It’s been said that eating 6 dates per day in the month leading up to your due date can help a women go into labor on their own, and dates also help with cervical ripening. Once again, not sure if this is true or not, but why not try it?! What have you got to loose?!
  • and everything else i mentioned in my 1st and 2nd trimester must haves!

33 Weeks Pregnant {Baby #6 Update}

Hi Guys!

Today i thought i would share a baby #6 update!

I’m currently 33 weeks and 2 days pregnant with baby #6. I had a midwife appointment last week and everything is looking great with the baby. His heart rate was good (140’s) and my stomach was measuring at exactly 32 weeks.

Baby has been head down for the longest time now and i’m hoping he stays that way.

In my 24 week update i shared how i had gained 7 pounds, well i’ve gained another 8 pounds, for a total of 15 pounds so far.

I’m not having any cravings at the moment. I still get heartburn from time to time, which is completely normal for me when i’m pregnant.

The biggest change of all is i switched over to a midwife, at 27 weeks. I’ll share more details on all that towards the middle of January. But i will say this, i’m really happy i made the switch!

That’s all i can think of to update at the moment.

24 Weeks Pregnant Update {Baby #6}

Hey Guys!

I just went to my 24 week doctor appointment yesterday, so i thought now would be a good time to give a little update on how this pregnancy is going.

Today i am 24 weeks & 2 days pregnant with baby #6. If you missed my gender reveal announcement, this baby is a boy. Which will make 5 boys & 1 girl for us.

I know a lot of people do weekly updates, but i just thought that would be kind of annoying, and honestly not much changes from week to week so there wouldn’t be much to update. Instead i plan on giving these updates once a month, maybe i’ll do weekly as my due date gets closer, i’m not sure yet. We will see how it goes.

Back to the update, my measurements are right on track and baby’s heartbeat is perfect. I go back for another checkup in 3 weeks and we will be doing the glucose testing then.

Heartburn, leg cramps, and insomnia are just a few of my current symptoms. Each of those symptoms are pretty common for me when i’m pregnant, so i’m kinda used to them. Not that they aren’t totally annoying. But once baby is born, they do go away.

I’m not really craving anything right now. For the first few months of my pregnancy all i wanted was spicy foods, and then i started craving cinnamon rolls.

During my first trimester, i only gained 2 pounds. Since then i’ve gained 5 pounds, for a total weight gain so far of 7 pounds.
